LG and Alltel have long been friends, so it didn't surprise us when the two companies introduced a new handset. The LG AX275 offers basic to midrange features in a minimalist design. It won't wow cell phone geeks or slaves to fashion, but it should satisfy anyone looking for a simple phone for making calls and taking photos. The AX275 is a reasonable $139, but you can get it for $99 with service.
DesignThe AX275 isn't the most stylish phone, but it has an understated appeal just the same. Available in silver or pink (we reviewed the silver model), it has a basic rectangular shape with clean lines and a smooth finish. The angles are a bit sharp, but it's compact and lightweight (3.58 inches long by 1.81 inches wide by 0.78 inches thick and 2.82 ounces) and has a comfortable and solid feel in the hand. The external display is small (0.75 inch diagonally) for the phone's size, but it manages to cram in all the essential information, including the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID. The display is monochrome, however, so it won't show photo caller ID, and it doesn't work as a viewfinder for taking self-portraits with the camera.
The camera lens sits just above the display, while a speaker sits on the bottom of the front flap. A black rectangle surrounds the external display on both the pink and silver versions and adds a bit of color contrast. Other features on the exterior of the AX275 are few. A volume rocker, camera shutter, and covered headset jack sit on the left spine, while the charger port rests on the right spine.
The square internal display is also a bit small at just 1.5 inches diagonally (160x120 pixels), but it has a decent resolution, with support for 65,000 colors. Graphics weren't terribly sharp, but on the whole, the screen is perfectly fine for this caliber of phone. The simple menus are easy to understand and come in two styles. You can change the dialing font size and color, the brightness, and the backlight time.
The navigation controls are very spacious; in fact, they take up almost a third of the phone's lower flap. There's a square four-way toggle with central OK button, two soft keys, the Talk and End controls, and a back button. The latter key does double duty as a speakerphone control (nice), and the toggle works as a shortcut to four features. Just be aware that all navigation controls are flat with the surface of the phone, so dialing by feel can be difficult. They keypad buttons are flush as well, but they're quite large with clear definition between the individual keys. Also, they have large text and a bright backlighting.
Features The AX275 has a 500-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, two e-mail addresses, and notes. You can save callers to groups and pair them with one of 31 polyphonic ringtones. You can assign a photo as well, but remember that it won't show up on the external display. Other features are pretty standard. There's a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, voice dialing, USB mass storage, a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a calendar, a tip calculator, a notepad, a world clock, a stopwatch, a unit converter, and a calculator. The AX275 has about 15MB of shared memory.

Sony VAIO FZ180E

The good: Typically excellent Sony design; handy media control buttons; Blu-ray drive and HDMI output.
The bad: Loaded up with adware and bloatware; no Bluetooth; not configurable.
The bottom line: We can't imagine the market for a 15-inch home theater laptop with Blu-ray is very large, but the Sony VAIO FZ180 certainly fits the bill--even if it's preloaded with unwanted come-ons for other Sony products.

The midsize Media Center laptop is a hard concept to get one's head around. Those interested in playing movies, especially via Blu-ray, are likely to want a 17-inch or larger display, while mainstream users often turn to 15-inch laptops for their mix of portability and pricing--not a surfeit of media features. Still, there's no denying the appeal of a well-designed laptop, and the $1,999 Sony VAIO FZ180 is, like the rest of Sony's line, head and shoulders above the competition in that regard, second only to perhaps Apple. If the design and features appeal, but you don't want the added expense of a Blu-ray drive, the FZ160 knocks $500 off the price by subbing in a plain-Jane DVD burner.

Like much of the Sony VAIO laptop family, the FZ180 has a large VAIO logo embossed on the back of the lid, while the sharp, angular case eschews the recent trend toward soft, rounded edges. At only 1.4 inches thick, it's slimmer than other recent 15-inch media-friendly laptops, such as the HP Pavilion dv6500t and the Dell Inspiron E1505.
Sony's flat-key keyboard is among our favorite laptop keyboards, but we wish the tiny touchpad mouse buttons were a little more substantial. Keeping with the multimedia theme, there's a four-way click-wheel above the keyboard that acts as a media-control hub, offering fast-forward, rewind, play, and volume controls.
The 15.4-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,280x800 native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size. Showing off a little corporate synergy, Sony uses the same LCD technology found in its Bravia line of HDTVs, which the company calls Xbrite, promising higher contrast and richer colors. The screen indeed looks excellent, especially when playing back a high-definition Blu-ray movie--although at 1,280x800, it's not really true 1080p resolution. You'll need the HDMI output into your big-screen TV to get the full Blu-ray experience.
But the system's generally excellent design and features are marred by some annoying "extras." At a time when other vendors like Dell and HP are making conscious efforts to declutter their systems, removing desktop come-ons for Internet access and music subscription services, the VAIO FZ180 is one of the most egregious offenders we've seen in recent memory. Not only is the default desktop background image an advertisement for Sony's Spider-Man 3 movie, the system comes thoughtfully preloaded with full-length copies of both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, you'll have to pony up $8.99 each to unlock the protected film files via an Internet connection, and even then, they'll only play on the original laptop. Together, the two films take up around 2.6GB of hard drive space. Other conspicuous partner applications include GameTap, Napster, and a Travelocity desktop widget.
Clicking the AV Mode button above the keyboard pops up a toolbar with links to a Sony Webcam utility, Intervideo's WinDVD for playing back Blu-ray discs, and Sony's much-maligned SonicStage music application (which pales in comparison to iTunes or Windows Media Player).

We were pleased to see the inclusion of 802.11n Wi-Fi technology, and the HDMI port is a no-brainer in a system with a Blu-ray drive. The lack of a Bluetooth antenna was disappointing but won't be a deal breaker for most.
As a fixed-configuration system, you're stuck with the default specs of the FZ180, but with a fast Core 2 Duo T7300 CPU running on an 800MHz frontside bus from Intel's new Centrino Duo lineup along with 2GB of RAM, Nvidia's new GeForce 8400M GT graphics card, and a decent-sized hard drive, we have no complaints. The similarly configured VAIO FZ160 costs $500 less and leaves out the Blu-ray drive and HDMI output.
The Sony VAIO FZ180 performed in line with other recent multimedia-friendly 15-inch laptops. The HP Pavilion dv6500t and the Gateway E-475M were marginally faster, on account of their T7500 CPU being one step farther up the Core 2 Duo ladder, but in real-world terms, you're unlikely to see any performance difference, even under heavy multimedia use. We were able to, for example, play a Blu-ray movie, surf the Web, and work on an Excel file at the same time with no slowdown or stuttering.
The FZ180 ran for 2 hours and 2 minutes on our DVD battery drain test, using the included lithium ion battery. Two hours from a 15-inch laptop isn't especially impressive but falls within acceptable parameters and was better than the HP dv6500t. Our DVD battery drain test is especially grueling, so you can expect longer life from casual Web surfing and office use.
Sony includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system, which included on-site service. Upgrading to a three-year plan will cost an extra $199. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line and an online support Web site, which helpfully gives you a custom page of links to manuals and drivers for your specific model.

The terrible thing about security software is that some of it doesn't protect you well, and worse yet, it can cost a bundle. Security should be universal--and it can be.
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition and Spybot Search and Destroy both run on my system because there's so much spyware out there, one of them will often catch stuff the other doesn't.

ZoneAlarm is one of the best free firewalls out there. You'll have to spend some time training it, but once you do, it's pretty bomb-proof.

If you turn your computer off and on a lot, you know it's true: waiting for tons of programs to load can drive almost anybody to coffee-mug-hurling madness. You can speed up the process by shutting down some of those auto starts, and you can begin with Spyware Doctor; if you only want to use it to scan for malware manually, you don't need to have it running all the time. Stop auto loading by clicking Settings, then Startup Settings. Under Pick a Category, uncheck Run at Windows Startup. (Be warned, though, that you won't get Spyware Doctor's constant OnGuard vigilance.)

Germany's O2 phone carrier has recently begun retail of their latest Windows mobile phone—the Xda terra. It's one of the first Windows mobile that's equipped with Windows Mobile version 6 OS.

The device is based on the HTC Herald's design and is fully loaded for any kind of connectivity. It's also expected to have a slide out keyboard like the previous model. The Xda terra, a quad-band GSM phone, is equipped for Wi-Fi and EDGE and is Bluetooth 2.0 compatible. It's even equipped with a 2 megapixel camera.

Samsung Introduces 16 GB Flash Memory Chip

Samsung the world's largest memory manufacturer has begun manufacturing the world's first 16 GB NAND flash memory chip. This is the highest capacity memory chip that is currently available and makes Samsung the only company with the ability to mass manufacture it currently. This new chip has been sampled on a 51nm process which itself is a major breakthrough. By utilizing a 51nm process, the production process for these new chips is as much as 60 percent more efficient.

"In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics," said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. "To minimize production costs and improve performance, we have applied the finest process technology a 'half generation' ahead of the industry, which is introducing 55nm and higher."

Apart from the new mega-capacity of the chip, the new manufacturing process has allowed Samsung to boost the read/write performance of the chip by as much as 80 percent. The new chip has a read speed of around 30 MB/s and write speed of 8 Mb/s as compared to the previous speeds of 17 Mb/s and 4.4 MB/s that were achieved on the 60nm chips.

The good: The Sony Ericsson Z710i has an attractive, user-friendly design and a generous selection of features. It's a good performer too.
The bad: The Sony Ericsson Z710i's external display doesn't have the best external display. It also lacks stereo speakers and a camera flash, and its call quality had a slight echo effect.
The bottom line: If you're looking for a user-friendly, quality music phone, the Sony Ericsson Z710i delivers the goods.

We have to admit that we're a little confused by Sony Ericsson's music phone strategy. Beyond the generally excellent Walkman MP3 phones, the company has put out a selection of other music handsets as well. Handsets like the Sony Ericsson Z710i aren't branded as official Walkman models, but they have just about the same music feature set nonetheless. So, like we said, it's just a bit confusing. Regardless, the Z710i accomplishes what it sets out to do. It's a quality phone and music player and the Sony Ericsson seems to have corrected design issues that plagued its phones in the past.

Design
Except for a color change, the Z710i is strikingly similar to the Sony Ericsson W710i Walkman. It has the same flip phone design with the looped antenna on the top of the rear flap. Like its predecessor, it's a tad boxy (3.4 by 1.9 by 1.0 inches). But it's a pleasant shape on the whole and it has a comfortable and solid (3.6 ounces) feel in the hand. The dark-gray color scheme is attractive, and it also comes in a lighter "metallic sand" version as well.

Compared with the W710i, the Z710i's exterior features are both improved and somewhat disappointing at the same time. We'll start with the bad news first. We dinged the W710i for its bland external display and we're going to have to do the same with the Z710i. Like its predecessor, the display is very large (1.5 inches) but the monochrome resolution means it doesn't support photo caller ID. It also won't act as a viewfinder for self-portraits, but Sony Ericsson redeemed itself this time around by adding a self-portrait mirror to the camera lens just above (there's still no flash though). You can change the backlighting time, and though the brightness isn't customizable the display remains visible in direct light.

Below the display and the sturdy hinge is the well-designed navigation array. A large, tactile four-way toggle with a central OK button is surrounded by two soft keys, dedicated Clear and Back controls, and a shortcut for the Web browser. You can program the toggle to give one-touch access to four functions while another dedicated control opens a secondary menu of user-defined shortcuts. As with other Sony Ericsson handsets, the Z710i lacks Talk and End buttons; instead the soft keys perform those functions. Sony Ericsson is getting better with its keypads and the Z710i shows the company's progress. Though similar to the W710i in design, they don't feel as cheap and aren't as slippery. The raised keys are large and are lit by a bright backlighting. Just below the keypad are the Power button and a dedicated messaging control. Both keys are a bit small, but it's not a huge deal.

Features
The ZZ10's feature set closely follows that of its predecessor. The phone book holds a healthy 1,000 contacts with room in each entry for five phone numbers, e-mail and Web addresses, a job title and company, work and home street addresses, a birth date, and notes. And if you have more than 1,000 friends, the SIM card holds an additional 250 names. You can assign contacts to a group or pair them with one of 15 polyphonic ringtones. You can assign a photo or video ringtones as well, but keep in mind that they won't show up on the external display.

Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a task list, a notepad, a timer, a world clock, a stopwatch, a calculator, and a voice memo recorder (space is limited by the available memory.) On the high-end side, the Z710i comes with a speakerphone (usable after you make a call), PC syncing, full Bluetooth with a stereo profile, push e-mail, a code memo for storing sensitive information, modem capability, and USB mass storage support.

Though it's not an official Walkman phone, the Z710i has just about the same music player, which is a good thing. Sony Ericsson is no slouch when it comes to music phones and the Z710i shows the company's strengths. It supports a broad range of formats, including MP3, MP4, 3 AAC, and WAV files. Opening the player takes you directly to the main menu, where you can organize music by artist, track name, or playlist. Settings include album/song shuffle and loop, stereo widening, and an equalizer. Unlike other Sony Ericsson music phones, however, the Z710i doesn't offer Sony's Mega Bass.

Switching between the cell phone and the music player is seamless, as music automatically stops when you receive a call. Hang up and press the dedicated music key, and your song picks up from the point you left off. There's an airplane mode that lets you listen to your tunes in flight with the cell phone turned off, and you can minimize the player while using other functions. The interface is a bit utilitarian but we don't need fancy graphics to enjoy our tunes. And for even more music fun, the Z710i features an FM radio with 20 presets.

Our Z710i's internal memory is on the low side--just 18MB--but some alternate versions may have as little as 10MB. And keep in mind that, since it's shared with other applications, your actual storage space may be less. If you're planning to use the music player frequently, we recommend investing in a Memory Stick Micro for extra space; our test phone came with a 64MB card but larger cards are available. Getting music on the phone is relatively easy using the included USB cable and Sony Ericsson Disc2Phone and PC suite software. The Disc2Phone software is unchanged from previous Walkman phones. As such, it's quite spartan, but it's easy to understand (see Performance for more information).

The user-friendly 2-megapixel camera shoots photos in three sizes (2-megapixel, 1-megapixel, and standard VGA). Other options include two quality settings, three color effects, a night mode, white balance and brightness adjustments, 12 fun frames, a 2.5X zoom (smaller then the W710i), and four shutter sounds (there's no silent option). There's also a self-timer, a multishot mode, a time and date stamp, and an option for taking panoramic shots. When finished with your shots, you can save them to the phone or send them to a friend in a multimedia message. We don't like that the phone has to downsize a 2-megapixel photo in order to send it. Alternatively, you can use the USB cable and PC software to transfer a photo to a computer for printing. Overall photo quality was decent with vivid, sharp colors and distinct object outlines. On the other hand, it's disappointing that the Z710i doesn't have a flash. A PhotoDJ lets you edit your photos while the software includes a starter edition of Adobe Photoshop.

The camcorder takes clips with sound and offers a set of editing options similar to the still camera. Clips meant for multimedia messages are capped at about two minutes; otherwise you can shoot for as long as the memory permits. Video quality was satisfactory, with little blurriness. The Z710i comes with a VideoDJ application.

You can personalize the Z710i with a variety of color themes, wallpaper, and screen savers. You can purchase more options with the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. You can download more ringtones as well or create your own using the MusicDJ application. And unlike other music phones, you can save MP3 files as ringtones. Alpha Wing 2 is the only Java (J2ME) game included, but you get the full version.

Performance
We tested the quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) Sony Ericsson Z710i world phone in San Francisco using T-Mobile service. Call quality was generally good with no voice distortion. The volume level also was admirable and we encountered little static or interference. It's worth noting though that the audio had a slight echoed effect, almost as if the sound was coming from the back of the speaker. It wasn't detrimental to our conversations, but it was noticeable just the same. On their end, callers said they could hear us plainly, though they could tell we were using a cell phone. Also, they complained of some wind noise. Speakerphone calls were decent and less muffled than on other phones. That said, the rear-facing speaker means we had the best experience if we rested the phone upside-down. We also tested the phone with the included wired headset and a Bluetooth headset, and had a satisfactory experience with both.

Music quality was admirable and on par with other Sony Ericsson music phones. As with the W710i we were really hoping for stereo speakers, but you can get stereo sound with the included wired headset. Sound quality was pretty impressive considering the headset comes included with the phone, which is a good thing since Sony Ericsson's proprietary connection prohibits against using a headset of your own. Fortunately, the music player interface wasn't as sluggish as on the W710i and unlike the W810i the Disc2Phone software didn't ask us repeatedly to install a driver. Music transfer time also shows improvement; it took just over a couple of minutes to transfer 40MB of tunes.

The Sony Ericsson Z710i has a rated battery life of 10 hours talk time and 14.5 days of standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the Z710i has a digital SAR rating of 1.36 watts per kilogram.

We have to admit that we're a little confused by Sony Ericsson's music phone strategy. Beyond the generally excellent Walkman MP3 phones, the company has put out a selection of other music handsets as well. Handsets like the Sony Ericsson Z710i aren't branded as official Walkman models, but they have just about the same music feature set nonetheless. So, like we said, it's just a bit confusing. Regardless, the Z710i accomplishes what it sets out to do. It's a quality phone and music player and the Sony Ericsson seems to have corrected design issues that plagued its phones in the past.

Design
Except for a color change, the Z710i is strikingly similar to the Sony Ericsson W710i Walkman. It has the same flip phone design with the looped antenna on the top of the rear flap. Like its predecessor, it's a tad boxy (3.4 by 1.9 by 1.0 inches). But it's a pleasant shape on the whole and it has a comfortable and solid (3.6 ounces) feel in the hand. The dark-gray color scheme is attractive, and it also comes in a lighter "metallic sand" version as well.

Compared with the W710i, the Z710i's exterior features are both improved and somewhat disappointing at the same time. We'll start with the bad news first. We dinged the W710i for its bland external display and we're going to have to do the same with the Z710i. Like its predecessor, the display is very large (1.5 inches) but the monochrome resolution means it doesn't support photo caller ID. It also won't act as a viewfinder for self-portraits, but Sony Ericsson redeemed itself this time around by adding a self-portrait mirror to the camera lens just above (there's still no flash though). You can change the backlighting time, and though the brightness isn't customizable the display remains visible in direct light.

Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones (black)

One of the better cell phone developments in the past year has been the proliferation of stereo Bluetooth. While previously it seemed that handset manufacturers were consciously avoiding the feature, a simultaneous push for music phones has, thankfully, made stereo Bluetooth a reality. And as the number of supported phones increases, manufacturers have started to introduce stereo Bluetooth headphones as well. One of Moto's latest entries in the space is the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones. Designed with the sports enthusiast in mind, these headphones feature a sleek, space-age form factor that wraps behind your head. For both calls and music, the sound quality was decent--and the fit was relatively comfortable. Priced in the $100 range, they're not exactly cheap, but they won't break the bank either.

Motorola emphasizes the word "active" when mentioning the S9, and by looking at the S9's design, it's clear why. Sleek and aerodynamic, the S9 weighs less then an ounce, which makes it one of the lightest stereo headphones we've seen. It also employs a simple, behind-the-head design that isn't clunky and doesn't look too conspicuous when worn. The rear-most portion of the headset, which holds the power button and charger jack, is the largest part of the S9 at almost an inch wide, but the ends connecting the earbuds taper to a slim diameter of .25 inches. We tested the red-and-blue version, but it also comes in a more subtle gray-and-black model as well. The S9 is water- and sweat-resistant, so you won't have to worry about wearing it during a hard workout.

Thanks to the practical design, we had no trouble slipping the headset on and off. Though the area with the power control and the charger jack is made of hard plastic, the ends are made of a rubberized material that bends easily. The ear hooks slipped easily on and off for us, but users with larger noggins may want to try the S9 before buying. On the whole, the fit is comfortable and the light weight made it barely noticeable, even for longer-wearing periods. The fit was quite secure as well. But the .5-inch earbuds did have a tendency to pinch if not positioned just-so. Indeed, it took us a few minutes of fiddling with the earbuds until they slipped comfortably into the ear. On the upside, the ear tips are made a flexible rubber and you get a choice of three sizes.

The controls on the headset were easy to understand and to use. As we mentioned previously, the power control is located on the bottom of the rear end of the headset, just next to the mini-USB charger port. It can be hard to locate when you're wearing the headset, but we can't imagine you'd be turning it on and off excessively. The charger jack is protected by a rubber flap, although the fit wasn't very secure. A small indicator LED sits between the power button and the charger port.

Moto smartly separated the phone and music controls on the S9. A talk button and the volume control sits just near the left earbud. The former is easy to find and has a soft, tactile feel; the volume control is touch-sensitive and barely needs to be pressed. We haven't seen touch controls in very many headsets, but it's a feature we love on the S9. At times, they could be a bit too sensitive, but overall it was a very user-friendly experience. A music play button sits near the right earbud and is also touch-sensitive.

We tested the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones with the Motorola Razr V3xx. The pairing process took only a few seconds and the connection remained strong. Also, we were able to reconnect instantly after turning both devices off for a short period. Overall sound quality was quite good for all kinds of audio. We could hear callers plainly and there was plenty of volume, even in windy or noisy environments. Callers reported few problems on their ends and we had no trouble being understood by voice-automated calling systems. Our only complaint was that voices on our side sounded harsh and almost robotic at times. However, the effect wasn't constant, so we don't consider it a deal-breaker. Other calling features include voice dialing, call reject, and last-number redial.

Sound from the music player was better than the call sound. We loved the stereo experience and we were impressed by the volume range. Keep in mind that the sound wasn't the sharpest we've heard, but it's more than adequate for most uses. Conveniently, the music automatically pauses when you receive a call, and then resumes after you hang up. We also tested the headphones with streaming video clips and enjoyed solid audio quality. The S9 has a promised battery life of six hours on a single charge.

The C300 measures 18.8 mm in thickness and weighs 94g, with an easy-to-slide, slim form.

The bad: Occasional autofocus hunting; Optical Picture Stabilization only buys you about a stop.
The bottom line: Despite a great feature set for the price, pro-level customization, and excellent photo quality, we can't think of a single reason to buy the Samsung GX-10 over its Pentax-made twin, the K10D.

Though not nearly as identical to the Pentax K10D as earlier models were to their Pentax twins, the Samsung GX-10 is similar enough to consider the same for review purposes. On the upside, that means this 10-megapixel digital SLR turns out to be a very good camera for its price: a feature-packed, well-designed and capable shooter.

Most of the variations between the two models are cosmetic, right down to the slight differences in grip on the otherwise identical 15mm-55mm kit lenses. Generally, all the controls on the K10D--labels, menu text, and buttons--are larger and easier to read or manipulate. Aspects of the GX-10's menu system show a little more thought. For instance, on the custom settings choices, the Pentax displays a "1" to show that the default is selected for a given option; the Samsung tells you the current value of the selection. In other words, if you've selected the RGB color space, the K10D displays a "1" while the GX-10 indicates "RGB."

Like the K10D, the GX-10 has a dust-and-weather-sealed 1.8-pound body, with a build quality that's rare for its price class. It also offers the same great set of features, with options you don't often see for less than $1,000: bulb and external-flash sync (at 1/180th sec); a raw-format override button; a preview option that flips up the mirror to display a snapshot of the scene or an optical depth-of-field preview; color temperature presets for white balance; and support for Adobe DNG as its native raw format. Unsurprisingly, the GX-10's performance results look remarkably similar to the K10D's. Its time-to-first shot and typical shutter lag of about half a second come in around the average, and difficulty autofocusing in dim light results in a 1.6 second lag in suboptimal environments. At half a second, JPEG and raw shot-to-shot speed also fall in the middle of the pack, though its 3.1fps continuous shooting clip elevates it a bit above the budget crowd. I also ran into the same occasional focus lock issues--usually during close-ups--where it would rock back and forth quickly for a few iterations, as if trying to decide whether it was satisfied. Most of the time, I fell into a rhythm with it, as you do with any good camera, but occasionally missed a shot waiting for it to catch up.

Although I found the exposures generally a bit too dark, the excellent noise profile--quite good up through ISO 800, and competitive at ISO 1600--provides enough latitude to allow for enhancement in software. The photos are very sharp as well.

However, whether the Samsung GX-10 is a good camera is almost beside the point. It's neither better nor cheaper than its Pentax equivalent, and Pentax has both the photographic history, service experience, and breadth of dSLR lenses and accessories (which will nevertheless work with the GX-10). So why even consider it?

Red Hat bands with open-source allies

SAN FRANCISCO--Red Hat, planning a new expansion beyond its core Linux operating system business, will launch a service later this year called the Red Hat Exchange to sell partners' open-source software.

The service, which the company announced Wednesday, marks a new stage both in Red Hat's competition with proprietary software companies such as Microsoft, IBM and Oracle, and in its alliances with open-source companies. The Red Hat Exchange is designed to help bring a much broader collection of open-source options to market, piggybacking on Red Hat's brand and customer connections.

Red Hat chose the approach even though it will increase competition with some of its business partners such as Oracle and IBM, said Paul Cormier, executive vice president of engineering, at an event here to launch Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

"We can choose to stand in the way of these open-source technologies, or we can get on the bus and drive. We're going to choose the latter," Cormier said.

The Red Hat Exchange (RHX) is evidence of a more inclusive approach at Red Hat, said Matt Asay, vice president of marketing at Alfresco, an exchange partner and a competitor to EMC's proprietary Documentum document-management software.

"This is a big step in making Red Hat the hub of the open-source ecosystem, which I think is its rightful place," Asay said. "I think it's Red Hat finally exerting the kind of leadership it should have exerted years ago. (It) just a few months ago acted like it was Red Hat against the universe--open source or proprietary companies."

And MySQL, an open-source database supplier, gets to draft off Red Hat's clout, said Zack Urlocker, MySQL's executive vice president of products.

"RHX acts as a good housekeeping seal of approval. It shows that MySQL is certified and tested and works well with RHEL, which is by far the most important platform for us," Urlocker said. "And RHX gives us a broader reach and more direct penetration into the Red Hat installed base."

Other open-source software companies will be available through the exchange as well: Enterprise DB, JasperSoft, SugarCRM, Zenoss, Zimbra, Zmanda, Compiere, Groundwork Open Source and Centric CRM.

Under the Red Hat Exchange, customers will be able to buy support subscriptions for a number of open-source applications. Red Hat will market the software, provide support and distribute software updates through its Red Hat Network, said RHX Director Matt Mattox.

The exchange partners compete directly with various proprietary software companies, but Red Hat has already shown a willingness to tangle with those rivals even when they're also business partners. The most prominent case is Oracle, which sells Java server software that competes directly with the JBoss products Red Hat acquired last year. Later in 2006, Oracle struck back with its Unbreakable Linux product, through which it's trying to distribute a clone of Red Hat Linux while undercutting Red Hat's support prices.

Red Hat partners Oracle and IBM didn't respond to requests for comment.

Mike Evans, Red Hat's vice president of partner development, said the Raleigh, N.C.-based company will aggressively promote the exchange. "It's going to be big," he said.

Red Hat wouldn't say when this year the exchange will go live, but it's in limited release with some customers now. One possible launch date is the Red Hat Summit that begins May 9 in San Diego.

Red Hat will get a percentage of revenue from the partnerships, Evans added. The new software won't cost more than buying Red Hat Linux and the other packages separately, and they may cost a little less together, Mattox said.

Asay was happy with the revenue split. "They are being fair. They're doing most of the marketing, providing the infrastructure to take payments and process payments, and providing first- and second-line support," he said.

The company will use customer feedback mechanisms to rate the open-source options, similar to Amazon.com rankings, Evans said. Red Hat also will offer trial versions of all the products, Mattox added.

Microsoft probes possible IE 7 phishing hole

Microsoft is investigating a possible vulnerability in Internet Explorer 7 that could help cybercrooks launch phishing scams, the company said Wednesday.

An attacker can use an error message displayed by the latest Microsoft browser to send Web surfers to malicious Web sites that will display with the address of a trusted site, such as a bank, Aviv Raff, a developer in Israel, wrote on his Web site. Raff included an example where the error message directs the Web surfer to a site of his choice.

Microsoft is looking into the issue, a representative said. "Microsoft is not aware of any attacks attempting to use the reported vulnerability," the representative said in an e-mailed statement. "Microsoft will continue to investigate... to help provide additional guidance for customers as necessary."

The vulnerability relates to the message IE displays when Web page loading is aborted, Raff wrote. An attacker can rig the message by creating a malicious link. The message will offer a link to retry loading the page; hitting it brings up the attacker's page, but showing an arbitrary Web address, he wrote.

To launch a phishing attack, an attacker can create a Web link that purports to go to a trusted site, such as a bank. When clicked, the link results in a rigged error page. Following the reload link on that page will display the attacker's Web site with the address of the trusted site in the IE 7 address bar, Raff wrote.

Phishing attacks are a prevalent Internet threat that typically use fraudulent Web sites and spam e-mail to trick people into giving up personal information such as Social Security numbers and credit card details.

IE 7 on Windows Vista and Windows XP are affected, Raff wrote.

The good: The Samsung SGH-T329 Stripe has an appealing design with user-friendly controls. It also offers a decent feature set including Bluetooth and a speakerphone.
The bad: The Samsung SGH-T329 Stripe had patchy sound quality and lacks true world phone capability.
The bottom line: Though the Samsung SGH-T329 Stripe offers Bluetooth and an appealing design, sound quality wasn't reliable.
Just a few weeks after we first saw it at CES, the new Samsung SGH-T329 Stripe is now available with T-Mobile. Styled in grey and silver with appealing curvy lines, the Stripe barely looks like its predecessor but it sports many of the same features including a VGA camera, a speakerphone, and instant messaging. And this time you also get Bluetooth. Sound quality was serviceable though patchy at times. You can get it for $49 with service.

Design
As we said above, the SGH-T329 Stripe looks quite different from T-Mobile's Samsung SGH-T309. It's a tad taller at 3.3x1.7x0.9 inches but it's also a bit lighter at 3.3 ounces. What's more, instead of the SGH-T309's black, the SGH-T329 features a cool silver color scheme with a grey stripe (of course) that is both simple and appealing at the same time. We also like the curved shape, yet we have one tiny complaint. Since the rear face is beveled, the phone won't rest fast on a surface with the flip open.

The vertical external screen is a nice change from the standard square display. It shows the time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID. You can change the contrast but not the font size or the backlight time. Also, the monochrome resolution means it doesn't support photo caller ID, and it won't work as a viewfinder for self-portraits. The Stripe's camera lens sits just above the external display but there's no flash or self-portrait lens. A volume rocker sits on the left spine while a camera shutter, and the charger port/headset jack sits on the right spine.
The 1.75-inch (128x160 pixels) internal display on the SGH-T329 supports 65,000 colors and is about average as Samsung phones go. It's perfectly serviceable for browsing the user-friendly menus but photos and games won't look as rich as they would on a 262,000-color display. You can change the brightness, backlighting time, the background color, and the font style, size, and color.

The Stripe's navigation array is standard Samsung consisting of a four-way toggle with a central OK button, two soft keys, a clear key, and the talk and end/power buttons. You can set the four-way toggle to act as a shortcut to four user-defined functions but we did miss a dedicated speakerphone key. The keypad buttons are quite large with easy-to-read text. We also like the beveled shape that makes it easy to dial by feel. They also have a bright backlighting for dialing in dim situations.

Features
The Samsung SGH-T329 includes all the basics you would expect on a basic camera phone. The 1,000-contact phone book has room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail address, and notes (the SIM holds an additional 250 names). You can save contacts to groups or pair them with a polyphonic ringtone--just nine come with the phone. You can assign contacts a photo as well, but keep in mind they won't show on the external display. Other features include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a calendar, a task list, a calculator, a world clock, a unit converter, a timer, a stopwatch, and a tip calculator. Instant-messaging support for AOL, ICQ, Windows Live, and Yahoo is on board as well, and we're glad to see Samsung improved on the SGH-T309 by including Bluetooth.

The Stripe's VGA camera takes pictures in four resolutions (640x480, 320x240, 160x120, and 128x96). Other features were less plentiful than on the SGH-T309 but you still get a decent range of options including five color effects, a 4X zoom, brightness and white balance controls, a night mode, and a self-timer. As we said previously though, a flash and a self-portrait mirror are absent. Once a picture is taken, you can send it via multimedia messaging, upload it to an online T-Mobile album, or store it the phone's 21MB of memory. Photo quality is what you'd expect from a VGA camera; objects were fuzzy, and colors were washed out.

You can personalize the Stripe with a variety of wallpaper and alert sounds. As always, you can buy more options from T-Mobile's T-Zones Internet store with the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. For playtime, there are demo versions of five Java (J2ME) titles: Forgotten Warrior, Freekick, Arch Angel, Lumines Block Challenge, and Midnight Pool. You'll have to buy the full versions for extended play.

Performance
We tested the tri-band (GSM 850/900/1900) Samsung SGH-T329 Stripe in San Francisco using T-Mobile service. Sound quality was uneven overall. The volume was a tad weak and may be too low for users with hearing impairments. Also, while voices sounded natural, the audio was patchy on a few occasions. Speakerphone calls has a slight echoed effect and were only really effective when we were in a quite location. The tri-band support is rather disappointing as we're used to seeing full quad-band world phones from T-Mobile.

The Stripe has a rated battery life of six hours talk time and 11 days standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the SGH-T329 has a digital SAR rating of 1.38 watts per kilogram.

The good: Norton 360 is mercifully light on system resources; it's intuitive, covers most of the bases that a comprehensive security-and-performance tool should, and includes free online storage.
The bad: Norton 360 doesn't support Firefox or Opera browsers; doesn't include wireless security tools, doesn't provide an ID vault for passwords or credit card info.
The bottom line: For home and student use, we think Norton 360 represents the best value for ease of use, tools offered, and overall system performance. We recommend it over McAfee Total Protection and Microsoft Windows Live OneCare.
Two years ago, when Symantec first presented us with their idea to create a complete security and performance solution, the company said it wanted to start from scratch, to build the thing right; we're happy to say that Symantec Norton 360 delivers on that early promise. That's not to say Norton 360 is perfect, nor is it designed for everyone. There are features in the all-in-one suite that we wish had been added (such as wireless security tools), but overall Norton 360 provides a much better user experience and security protection than either Windows Live OneCare or McAfee Total Protection. In fact, Norton 360 is better than Norton Internet Security 2007 in some respects, namely that it's lighter on system resources, the tools are better integrated, and it presents a much better design model than the current Norton product line. But more advanced users should stay with the Internet security suites for now.
Setup
Our setup of the final shipping version was surprisingly fast and easy. Norton 360 requires 300MB of hard drive space, considerably less than Windows Live OneCare, but about double that of McAfee Total Protection. Like the others, Norton 360 requires 256MB of RAM. Like Windows Live OneCare, Norton 360 works on Windows XP and Windows Vista. Only McAfee works on Windows 2000 through Vista. Like the other super suites, the price includes installation on up to three different PCs (for example, two desktops and a laptop).
We really like the Norton 360 interface; it's unlike the interface used on the rest of the Norton 2007 product line. The UI for Norton 360 is clean, intuitive, and no-nonsense. A toolbar across the top allows quick access to scans, configuration for tasks, access to your Norton online account, in-program Help, and technical support. Below that, there's a line that displays any current system alerts, such as configuring your backup and recovery options. The main section includes modules for PC Security, Transaction Security, Backup and Recovery, and PC Tuneup. Each of these modules displays a color-coded status and a brief explanation, with an option for more details.
Within each module is a clean list of various diagnostics and tools and their status. You can't, however, tweak your firewall settings here, or exclude a second drive from your virus and spyware scan; for that you need to use the main screen's toolbar for Tasks and Settings. It's a minor inconvenience; casual users will appreciate the clean reporting style, but advanced users (for whom the product was not intended) will want to tweak right away and become frustrated at the extra step. Also within each module are access to Help and technical support, along with selected extra steps that include access to glossaries and tutorials on the Symantec Web site. Gone are the blatant links to Symantec shopping that encourage you to purchase additional products, which we've seen in the past. We also like the fact that Norton 360 appears on the taskbar as an indiscrete icon, not the loud and flamboyant, yellow pill design used in Norton Internet Security 2007.
Should you want to remove Norton 360, we didn't find an uninstall icon and had to use the Add or Remove Programs tool within the Windows Control Panel. Although there is a separate listing for Symantec's LiveUpdate program, we were able to remove both programs by uninstalling Norton 360 alone. Upon reboot we found no registry entries and no system folders for Symantec or Norton 360.
Features
Rather than simply bundle all of the features from Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks, and Norton Confidential, Symantec went back to the drawing board and designed Norton 360 from the ground up. The result is a much more fluid experience. Even Symantec LiveUpdate, which sometimes feels like a clunky add-on to the other Norton products, is better integrated within Norton 360. Our initial update of the product was quick, with both LiveUpdate and Norton 360 downloading and installing within seconds.
Symantec pulled only the tools deemed most beneficial to the general user from all its product lines. Norton 360 includes antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, antirootkit protection, a firewall, Symantec's new SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Advance Response) behavioral monitoring software, and a vulnerability assessment tool to see what Windows updates your computer might be missing. An add-on pack of online tools includes Parental Control, Antispam, and other optional features such as blocking private data from leaking onto the Internet.
Norton 360 also includes tools to defragment your hard drive and clean up temporary files and other clutter than could slow your PC down. These tools are fine, but are nowhere near as complete as Symantec's own Norton SystemWorks. Norton 360 does include a backup and recovery tool, and provides up to 2GB of free online storage. Online storage is great if your home or office was somehow destroyed and you need access to your backup files from a remote location (think of Hurricane Katrina). For additional fees, you can increase your online storage volumes, up to 25GB at $69.99 per year. Microsoft Windows Live OneCare and McAfee do not offer online storage. All three products allow you to back up onto your hard drive, CD, DVD, or USB drive.
What's missing within Norton 360 are a few surprises. There are no tools specifically targeted for wireless home networks, a rapidly emerging area. Aside from help setting up such networks, we'd also like to see tools that help encrypt the signals with WEP, WPA, or WPA2, or at least monitor whether someone uninvited joins your home wireless network. Of the three super suites, only McAfee Total Protection includes wireless security.
For Internet privacy, though Norton 360 will authenticate a site via Symantec's own servers, it won't store your passwords or credit cards in an encrypted vault unless you download the optional add-on pack. Of the three super suites, only McAfee Total Protection provides an ID vault with the program itself. Total Protection also provides a data file shredder, a must if you have personal files that you don't want hanging around your hard drive after the fact.
We also found that Norton 360 is optimized for Internet Explorer only, and not Firefox and Opera browsers. It could be said that Symantec realizes that Internet Explorer users need more protection, but it would be nice to use the antiphishing feature in Norton 360 on Firefox or Opera. Of the three super suites, only McAfee supports Firefox; none support Opera.
Performance
If you've ever used a Symantec Norton product and then removed it because it was too heavy on your system resources, you'll be delighted to learn that Norton 360 feels light compared to the legacy of the past. We counted only three processes running on our task manager, compared with several from McAfee and Microsoft. This is a huge improvement over previous editions of Norton Internet Security, which tended to be very large.
Norton 360 uses the Norton Antivirus 2007 engine, an application that improves on last year's CNET Labs' performance test scores, although Norton turns in a mixed bag of results overall. On our iTunes test, Norton lost ground compared with last year, taking 208 seconds as opposed to 184 seconds last year. On our Sorensen Squeeze test, Norton improved, taking 317 seconds compared to 326 seconds last year. Overall, Norton showed the most improvement with individual file scans; it took only 117 seconds versus 320 seconds last year. But in terms of boot speed, Norton lost ground by taking 4 seconds longer, 66 seconds as opposed to last year's 62 seconds. Visit CNET Labs to find out how we test antivirus software.
To determine how well a product will protect your PC, we refer to test results from two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, Norton AntiVirus 2006 earned an Advanced + rating (the highest), catching 98 percent of all malware tested, and from Checkvir.com, Norton AntiVirus 2006 was one of eight products to earn its Standard rating (also the highest).
For firewall tests, we used Nmap on a closed system with a router connection; however, we were unable to scan the Norton Internet Security 2007 PC. All other vendors tested produced at least some results in the various tests performed. Norton hides or "stealths" a PC from criminal hackers, which is good, though we're suspicious of what we can't see.
Support
Within Norton 360 there's in-program Help and then there's Support. Help consists of in-program FAQs, which are very detailed for Symantec. Either search a term or scroll through the index to find the topics you need. Support is Symantec's technical support for Norton 360. In the final release version, we were surprised at how little is offered. The knowledge base is cool, first diagnosing your version of Norton 360 for any known problems. If you still want help, the program asks you what help you need and provides a a menu of FAQs. There's also an envelop icon that leads you to e-mail and chat support (which are free) or telephone (which is paid; the telephone support service was not yet available at the time of this review). The user guide is a mere 30 pages and only includes the bare minimum of details; use the in-program Help instead. There is no tutorial offered.
Conclusion
Norton 360 is a good example of the "out of the box" thinking needed by traditional security vendors today. By starting from scratch and building an entirely new security product, Symantec has made long overdue improvements to its existing product line. Hopefully next year's release of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security suite will benefit as well. But Norton 360 is not for everyone. Designed for home and student users, advanced users will want more online-transaction security tools and wireless protection. That said, for home and student use, we think Norton 360 represents the best value of ease, tools, and performance, and we recommend it over McAfee Total Protection or Microsoft Windows Live OneCare.

Flaw found in Office 2007

Researchers have discovered a "highly critical" security flaw in newly released Office 2007, despite Microsoft's efforts to deliver its most secure version yet of the productivity software.

The consumer version of Office 2007, which launched only four weeks ago, is designed to withstand higher scrutiny by malicious code writers, as Microsoft subjected the software to code auditors as part of its security development lifecycle.

But researchers at eEye Digital Security found a file format vulnerability in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007, which could be exploited to let an outsider run code on a compromised PC.

"We were surprised we could find a flaw so quickly (after Office 2007 launched) and one that was part of their core products," said Ross Brown, eEye's chief executive.

An attacker could create a malicious publisher file, he said. Once the recipient opens the file, he or she could find the system infected and susceptible to a remote attack.

Researchers at eEye used a standard process of code auditing in discovering the vulnerabilities, Brown added. He noted that Microsoft either did not do a "good job" with its code auditing, or it may not have had enough people working on such a task.

Microsoft, meanwhile, said it is investigating eEye's report of a possible vulnerability in Publisher 2007 and will provide users with additional guidance if necessary.

Executives at the software giant have recently said they expect security challenges to keep emerging, as an increasing number of devices connect to the Internet.

No public exploits have been reported in circulation for Publisher 2007 and, given Office 2007's recent release, the flaw may hold little attraction for attackers who may wish to concentrate on software that is in greater distribution, eEye said.

Mozilla has released updates to its Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client for Windows, Mac and Linux users, the organization announced Friday.

"Due to the security fixes, we strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to these latest releases," Mozilla said in a post on its development site.

"This update resolves the location.hostname vulnerability and other security and stability issues," Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering at Mozilla, said in a statement.

The location.hostname vulnerability that Schroepfer referred to was the Firefox cookie flaw discovered by Michal Zalewski, an "ethical hacker" from Poland.

In mid-February, Zalewski posted his proof-of-concept on a mailing list for other security experts. His note said that a flaw in Firefox could allow hackers to set or change cookies, permissions for Web site settings and passwords, for their own purposes. A fix for the high-impact flaw was made by Firefox developers last week.

This update includes the patch for that fix, as well as a fix for the critical level flaw involving memory corruption that can lead to crashes. That flaw left people using JavaScript in their mail--a practice Mozilla "strongly discourages"--open to attacks.

"Thanks to the work of our contributors we have been able to address these issues quickly in order to minimize the security risk to Firefox users," Schroepfer said.

The update is available in 37 languages from the GetFirefox.com and GetThunderbird.com Web sites for 1.5.0.10 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird, as well as Firefox 2.0.0.2. It is also scheduled to be available as of late Friday afternoon by clicking "Check for Updates..." in the Firefox Help menu.

The LG Dynamite KG300 boasts of having everything – a camera, Bluetooth, FM radio, memory card support, a good screen, etc. But does it end up being a jack of all and master of none? Does it actually blow up the table when you keep it down? Let’s find out. Design Let’s start off with its size - It's small, compact and light weight. It only comes in black and the whole phone has a very glossy look, without being too ostentatious. It’s quite a simple looking phone. It has silver trims on the side and all the slots (for headphones, USB, memory card) are covered with flaps, makes the phone a more look something something. Display The phone has a brilliant, vibrant QVGA (240x320 pixel) display. The color reproduction is superb and wallpapers look just fabulous on it. Even photos taken with the camera look excellent and crisp. Even the size of the screen is quite large, considering the size of the phone. In sunlight, the display did go a bit dull, but it wasn’t completely unreadable. User Interface The KG300 has a fairly commonly styled main menu with icons. The submenus are simpler, being a flat list of items. All items have numbers. Nokia users won’t easily get around the menu, but it’s not as bad as some Sagems we had used a while ago. When it comes to deleting messages, for a while I thought I couldn't, till I realized that I needed to open a message and then it gives me options to delete one or all. When you’re in the phonebook, a little girl’s voice will read out the number for you. This is probably useful for the visually impaired, but how about reading out the name when the phone rings? The phone doesn’t do that! It does offer video caller ID, so you can see a video of the person who’s calling or any other video, when you get a call. The interface doesn't have any themes, nor can any be downloaded. There’s a sound for almost everything the phone does. The default alert sound in case of a Yes/No prompt is highly irritating – it sounds like an old rickshaw horn being banged upon. You should turn this off, if you can figure out how to do it. The interface is not terrific fast most of the time. There isn’t too much lag when you’re typing out an SMS, which is a good thing, but there are certain quirks, such as not being able to hold down a key for one second to directly input the digit. The extra functions like World clock and currency converter are easy to use tools for you frequent travelers. Even the Calculator is user friendly. Keypad The keypad is rather small so all you guys with large thumbs will need to be careful as you could end up hitting 2 keys at once. There’s a 4-way navigation pad present, but, in my opinion, a 5-way navigation pad would have been better. It also has dedicated keys for the music player, volume and for the camera, but the camera key has to be depressed for more than one second, which isn’t good when you need to take shots in a hurry. That key also becomes the shutter key in camera mode. Tech The phone is equipped with tri-band GSM network support and GPRS, but not EDGE. The web browser tries to render the full web instead of WAP, but it often chokes on JavaScript and excessive CSS. It has Bluetooth 1.2. There is no support for A2DP stereo. It has no Infrared support. When connected to the PC via USB for data storage, the phone switches off. Though transferring data is as simple as drag and drop, I'd still prefer it if I was able to make or receive a call while transferring information to the phone. Where this phone seriously lacks is not having software to help back-up your phonebook and settings. Neither does the phone come with any software, nor was I able to find any this purpose. The phone has 60MB of internal memory and it supports a microSD cards upto 1GB. The boxed piece doesn’t come with any card, but this can be forgiven, given the price of the phone. 500 contacts can be filled into the phone itself. Multimedia Mediawise the phone is equipped with your regular 3GP-capable Real Player that plays video files in Landscape mode, video and still capture Camera, and an MP3 player. The MP3 player however is average. The 'ergonomic' headset looks great but the output is too low. Let’s be honest here, we live in a noisy city and need a player that drowns out excess noise. The KG300 earphones don’t cut it. On the other hand, the loudspeaker is quite loud and clear. Quality of the music files can be adjusted to your liking using the EQ presets; however it would have been a lot better if it had a customizable eq. The phone has a 2.5mm headset socket, so even though you can’t directly plug in your normal headphones, you can do it if you get a converter. The phone is also equipped with a melody composer to make your own tones. As mentioned before, you can assign a video file (or a picture) to a contact so it personalizes your incoming calls. It only has a small view on the main screen, but its still quite cool for a built-in feature. Camera The KG300 has a 2-megapixel camera, which is one of the best you can get at this price point. Actually, I think this *is* the best you can get at this price! The downsides to the camera are the lack of an LED flash and optical zoom, but once again, you can’t complain, given the price! The phone manages to focus on the object in the center of the frame at a short distance, while long distance shots appear blurred. On the plus side it does have plenty of creative modes with which you can take snaps. For example, a blue and copper carving mode, blackboard and white board and much more. It also has settings for cloudy days, or even if you would like to capture multiple images consecutively. There are settings for 5 and 9 snaps. For all you snap-happy photographers out there this is a real treat. Battery Life Battery-wise, it’s nothing to write home about really. It’ll run for around two days provided you’re not using its functions to the max. Too much of camera and loudspeaker usage might reduce it to less than that, but if you just use it as a phone, you should be able to get three days without any problems. It has a regular USB slot and it recharges directly when connected to the PC. Conclusion This phone boasts of having every feature possible out there. It does have most of the relevant features, but it does lack some key features such as an LED flash for the camera and EDGE network support for faster connectivity. But even so, when you consider the price of Rs. 8,800, the phone gives an amazing set of features such as a high resolution display, MP3 player, FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera etc. This is the lowest price phone to offer a 2 megapixel camera! I think the LG KG300 is well worth the price. There’s also a lower end model available – the KG200 – for around Rs. 6,400. The KG200 does not have Bluetooth and it’s camera is 1.3 megapixels. Even that’s a pretty good deal for it’s price.

In March, security vendor Finjan plans to release a secure browsing extension for Firefox and Internet Explorer called SecureBrowsing. Currently in beta, the tool appears to be similar to tools offered by McAfee SiteAdvisor and Exploit Prevention Labs Linkscanner Pro, which overlay a search engine results page with safety ratings.

Unlike SiteAdvisor (which is excellent for phishing prevention) and Linkscanner Pro (which is excellent for exploit prevention), the Finjan tool also will identify potential sources of virus and Trojan horse activity. The SecureBrowsing beta currently only works on a handful of search items on a few search engines, so it remains to be seen whether the final Finjan tool will be as effective against phishing sites as SiteAdvisor.

Windows Mobile 6

The good: Windows Mobile 6 features new shortcuts to make performing tasks easier, and there is added functionality to the Calendar and Contact apps. E-mail improvements include a new search function and HTML support, and there's good Windows Live integration. In addition, the Standard Edition (formerly Smartphone Edition) now includes Microsoft Office Mobile with editing capabilities.
The bad: Some of the improvements to e-mail and the calendar app require that you have Exchange Server 2007, and there were no notable enhancements to the multimedia capabilities.
The bottom line: Though it doesn't offer earth-shattering new features and interface issues remain, Windows Mobile 6 brings a collection of noteworthy improvements that makes its mobile devices easier to use and equips mobile professionals with more robust productivity tools.

Windows Vista isn't the only operating system making its debut this year, as Microsoft also revamped its OS for mobile devices and formally introduced Windows Mobile 6 at 3GSM World Congress. Taking the reins from Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6 isn't a complete overhaul of the OS; instead, it offers a number of useful enhancements that makes performing tasks easier and puts more powerful tools into the hands of mobile professionals. We were particularly impressed with the new e-mail search function, Mobile Office additions, and Windows Live integration, but we think Microsoft could have done a lot more. For example, multimedia improvements are practically nonexistent and the user interface is still kludgey, requiring numerous steps to complete a simple task. Also, some of the enhanced functionality to Outlook and calendaring require that you use Exchange Server 2007. Despite these flaws, the new improvements make Windows Mobile 6 worth the upgrade.

The best news, of course, is that new OS means there will be a number of new devices coming out. There will be three editions again, but they've been renamed as Classic (formerly known as Pocket PC Edition), Standard (Smartphone Edition), and Professional (Pocket PC Phone Edition), so you can look forward to a variety of form factors. In fact, we've already seen a number of product announcements from 3GSM, including the Motorola Q q9 and the HTC Vox. For Windows Mobile 5 users, Microsoft said it will be up to carriers and device manufacturers whether they will offer upgrades, but T-Mobile has already announced that it will offer updates to current T-Mobile Dash owners and future Dash devices will ship with Windows Mobile 6.

For our review, we checked out Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition using the HP iPaq 510 Voice Messenger, though we will continue to evaluate the OS and its variations as more devices start to arrive on the scene.

Interface

Windows Mobile 5 users won't be in for any major surprises when they see Windows Mobile 6, as the interface largely remains the same as before. Windows Mobile 6 does have more of a Vista look with its similar color scheme and bubbly, eye-pleasing icons. Along the top of the Today screen, you still get shortcuts to your most recently used apps, but the icons are slightly larger. Below that, you'll find such important information as time, date, upcoming appointments, messages, and so forth. Of course, you can customize the background image, color scheme, and backlight time.

One of the biggest complaints about Windows Mobile devices, especially when compared to Palm, is the number of steps it takes to perform a simple task, such as closing out of a program. This is still pretty much true of Windows Mobile 6, but Microsoft has taken some steps to ease the pain. For example, the company has added nine new e-mail shortcuts so you can easily reply, delete, move messages, and more. While this is a step in the right direction, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Features

Window Mobile 6 really doesn't offer any mind-blowing new features, but rather, it includes some nice refinements that make the devices easier to use as well as act more like your PC. However, we should warn you that a number of the enhanced PIM capabilities require Exchange Server 2007, so unfortunately, if you or your company have no plans to upgrade, you're left in the cold. We'll note such exceptions as we go through the features.

Contacts and Calendar

Starting with some of the basics, call history is now sorted to the appropriate contact page. Though you may think this isn't a big deal, it's actually quite convenient as you can easily see when you received and made calls to that specific person, the time of the call, the duration, and so forth. Also, the new OS provides a quick Send Text Message shortcut, so you can be on your way to text message heaven with just one click, rather than having to go through several steps.

The Calendar app is also more user friendly, as the upgrade provides a better view of your schedule at a glance. First, there's a new Calendar Ribbon that lines the top of the screen and shows you which times you are free and which are booked. In addition, you get a week view, and while it gives you a good overview of your schedule--complete with colored blocks for appointments--you can also get details of the event, such as meeting location, right along the bottom of your screen so you don't have to open each one. The calendaring capabilities are also more robust if you are using Exchange Server 2007. With that integration, you have the ability to not only see who is attending a meeting, but you can forward and reply to meeting requests as well. While we couldn't test this feature, we got a working demo, and we can see how it would really come in handy for the mobile professional, bringing more of that PC experience to your smart phone.

E-mail

E-mail is a lot smarter on Windows Mobile 6. First, all devices will ship with Microsoft's Direct Push technology so you get real-time e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization with your Outlook calendar, tasks, and contacts via Exchange Server. Microsoft has also added nine new one-click shortcuts, as we noted above; plus, you get more of the true Outlook experience as your In-box view shows messages that are flagged, marked as high importance, and so forth. Once again, with Exchange Server 2007, you can do even more with Outlook Mobile, such as set up an Out of Office reply.

Searching for e-mails is no longer an unpleasant task, thanks to a new search function. Similar to the Smart Dial feature on Windows Mobile 5 devices, where you input a couple of letters to pull up associated contact, you can simply start typing in a word while in your Inbox, and it will automatically pull up messages with that term in the subject or contact field. It worked great for us, and it's truly a timesaver.

There is, of course, continued support for POP3 and IMAP accounts, but now you can also view e-mails in their original HTML format, regardless of account type. If there happens to be a hyperlink within a message, you can select to go to that page or if a phone number is listed, you can dial out directly from that message as well.

Windows Live for Mobile and Web browsing

If you have a Hotmail/Windows Live e-mail account, you can easily access those messages with Windows Live for Mobile. It's a simple matter of inputting your user ID and password, then you can choose to synchronize your e-mail and contacts, which integrates nicely into your phone's address book. As far as instant messenger, you get Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger), which boasts some improvements in its own right. Now, you can have multiperson chats and send images and voice clips via IM. While we appreciate these new capabilities, we're disappointed that there's not a more universal app included that supports other popular IM clients such as AIM and Yahoo.

Another aspect of Windows Live for Mobile is the Live Search, giving you a quick and easy way to search the Web. When you first access Windows Live, you are given the option of adding a Live Search bar, as well as Windows Live services, to the Today screen, and we recommend doing so. It's truly handy just to turn on your phone, enter a search term in the field, press OK, and instantly get results. The Live Search bar is also now part of the Internet Explorer Mobile home page, as well as new expandable Favorites and History menus.

Finally, there is also a new Internet Sharing utility, courtesy of Windows Mobile 6, that allows you to easily set up your phone as a wireless modem for your laptop via Bluetooth, or you can use a USB connection as well.

Work and play

The big news here is that Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition (formerly Smartphone Edition) now has the full Microsoft Office Mobile Suite. Whereas Windows Mobile 5 smart phones typically came installed with the Picsel Viewer Suite for opening and viewing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, Windows Mobile 6 brings the real deal so you can not only see said files but also edit them. We should note, however, that the editing capabilities are pretty light. In Word, you're pretty much restricted to adding and deleting text and formatting type (such as bold, italic, underline, and highlight); while in Excel, you can insert rows and columns, sort, perform basic functions, and so forth. PowerPoint remains pretty much view-only, although you can change playback options. For now, you can't create new documents on Standard Edition devices. It is possible with OneNote 2007, but this isn't part of the standard Windows Mobile 6 package, so you'll have to shell out $79.95 for the app. That said, we were able to transfer all three document types using a beta version of ActiveSync 4.5 and had no problems viewing or editing them. Admittedly, trying to edit manuscripts and spreadsheets without a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard was a bit challenging on the HP iPaq 510.

Sadly, there were no notable improvements to Windows Media Player Mobile.

Service and support

Microsoft has maintained an informative and helpful support site for Windows Mobile 5 users; we hope and suspect that this will continue with Windows Mobile 6 as more devices become available. As it stands now, you can search through a number of help and how-to articles to get you through the basics, such as setting up your device, then delve into more advanced capabilities. As we noted in the beginning, it'll be up to carriers and device manufacturers to determine if they will offer Windows Mobile 6 upgrades.
